He further added, “Security forces have destroyed several of their base camps in Mangla Zargoon.”

In 2025, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia signed an agreement committing to mutual defense, with Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif previously stating that Saudi Arabia falls under Pakistan’s “nuclear security umbrella” in times of attack. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced the decision on Sunday, citing growing concerns over the spread of the rare Bundibugyo strain of the virus.

According to health officials, more than 300 suspected cases and at least 88 deaths have been reported so far, with the majority of infections emerging from eastern Ituri province in Congo, near the borders of Uganda and South Sudan.

Outbreak centred in the border region

The outbreak has primarily affected remote and densely connected border communities, raising concerns about cross-border transmission. Uganda has already confirmed at least two cases linked to the situation in Congo.

Authorities said one patient who travelled from Congo died in a hospital in Kampala, while a second unrelated case was later identified in the same city. Officials stressed that both individuals had recently been in Congo before showing symptoms.

WHO says the situation is serious but not a pandemic

Despite the emergency declaration, the WHO clarified that the outbreak does not currently meet the criteria of a global pandemic similar to COVID-19.

The organisation has also advised countries against imposing travel bans or border closures at this stage, instead urging coordinated surveillance and rapid containment measures.

According to Russian officials, more than 500 drones were utilized in this assault.

Attack Involving Over 500 Drones

According to reports, more than 500 Ukrainian drones were dispatched across various regions of Russia. The attack resulted in the deaths of three people in the Moscow region. Russia’s Ministry of Defense stated that the country’s air defense systems successfully shot down a total of 556 drones across more than a dozen regions, including Moscow.

According to the Ministry, security forces remained continuously engaged in intercepting the drone attacks. Andrei Vorobyov, the Governor of the Moscow region, provided updates via Telegram, stating that a drone crashed into a private residence, resulting in the death of a woman.

He also noted that an individual was trapped beneath the debris. According to the Governor, two other men also lost their lives in this attack, which occurred during the morning hours.

Following the assault, security measures have been heightened in several areas, and relief and rescue operations are currently underway.

At least 74 drones were shot down. Additionally, 12 people sustained injuries during this attack.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, providing updates on Telegram, stated that the areas where drone debris landed sustained only minor damage. He reported that over the preceding 24 hours, air defense forces had successfully shot down a total of 120 drones.

Although the Moscow region has been subjected to drone attacks on several previous occasions, the city of Moscow—Russia’s capital—is rarely targeted directly. Since Tuesday—following a prisoner exchange and the expiration of a three-day ceasefire—Russia and Ukraine have been launching continuous attacks against each other.

For the past four years, the Russian military has been relentlessly bombarding Ukraine. In response, Ukraine has also periodically carried out attacks within Russia. Ukraine states that its targets are Russian military bases and energy-related facilities.

According to a report citing Commerce and Industry Ministry data, exporters have increasingly started shifting cargo movement away from traditional Gulf transit hubs as disruptions continue across the region.

The most significant change has emerged in India’s trade relationship with the UAE and Singapore, both major transshipment centres that also have free trade agreements with India.

Singapore surpasses UAE in exports

Singapore has now overtaken the UAE as India’s second-largest export destination after witnessing a sharp rise in imports from India.

Exports to Singapore surged by nearly 180% in April, reaching $3.20 billion compared to $1.14 billion during the same month last year.

In contrast, exports to the UAE fell sharply by 36% to $2.18 billion, down from $3.43 billion a year earlier.

Officials said exporters have increasingly been routing shipments through Singapore since February as uncertainty and disruptions intensified in the Gulf region.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, has remained largely shut since March 2, severely affecting global maritime trade.

Energy import sources also shift

India’s import patterns have also changed significantly, especially in the energy sector.

Countries such as Oman, Peru and Nigeria have now entered India’s list of top import partners. Imports from Oman alone more than tripled in April, rising to $1.48 billion from $429 million last year.

Meanwhile, imports from Qatar declined sharply. Data showed shipments from Qatar dropped by 47% in March compared to the same period last year.

However, imports from Saudi Arabia recovered strongly in April and rose to $3.85 billion after weakening in March.

Fuel prices, rupee under pressure

The continuing West Asia conflict and disruption in oil supplies have increased global energy prices, adding pressure on India’s import bill.

The Indian rupee has weakened significantly against the US dollar and has fallen more than 5% since February-end.

To control rising costs, the government has introduced austerity measures, while oil companies recently increased petrol and diesel prices for the first time in four years. Import duties on precious metals have also been raised.

Before the conflict escalated, the Strait of Hormuz handled nearly 20% of global oil trade, making the current disruption one of the biggest energy supply challenges in recent years.

The blast occurred at a testing facility associated with Tomer, a state-owned Israeli defence company involved in the development of rocket and missile propulsion systems used by the Israeli forces.

Residents living in and around Beit Shemesh reported hearing a loud explosion that shook nearby areas. Several videos shared online showed a massive fireball lighting up the night sky, followed by thick plumes of smoke rising high above the site.

As the videos circulated, online speculation intensified, with some social media users questioning whether the incident was linked to sabotage, a missile malfunction or rising regional tensions involving Iran.

Following the incident, Tomer issued an official statement saying the explosion was part of a “pre-planned experiment” conducted according to schedule.

The company stressed that the event was a controlled test and said there had been “no irregular incidents” during the operation. Israeli broadcaster Kan also carried the company’s statement in an effort to calm growing public concern.

Authorities stated that no injuries had been reported and there was no damage to nearby civilian areas.

Sensitive military facility under spotlight

Tomer plays a significant role in Israel’s defence infrastructure and is involved in manufacturing rocket and missile motors for advanced military systems.

The latest explosion has drawn additional attention because of ongoing tensions in the region and previous unexplained incidents reported at sensitive Israeli facilities in recent years.

Iranian media outlets also highlighted the explosion, with some reports suggesting it could be connected to broader regional developments. However, Israeli authorities firmly denied any external involvement or security breach.

Officials continue to maintain that the blast was a routine defence-related test carried out under planned and controlled conditions.

The vessel had departed from Qatar’s Ras Laffan terminal and crossed the Strait on May 13 before reaching Indian waters. Officials confirmed that the tanker has 21 foreign crew members onboard.

Another LPG Vessel En route to India

A second LPG carrier, NV Sunshine, also crossed the Strait of Hormuz earlier this week and is expected to arrive at New Mangaluru Port by May 18. Authorities said both vessels were transporting LPG cargo meant for India and were being monitored closely due to the volatile regional situation.

During an inter-ministerial briefing held in New Delhi, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways confirmed the movement of the tankers.

Mukesh Mangal, Additional Secretary in the ministry, stated that the vessels were operating in coordination with Indian Oil Corporation to ensure the safe movement of critical energy supplies through the sensitive maritime corridor.

Strategic route under global attention

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important oil and gas transit routes. The passage has witnessed heightened security concerns following the recent US-Israel strikes on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory actions over the past two months.

Officials said that since the tensions escalated, a total of 13 Indian-linked vessels — including 12 LPG tankers and one crude oil tanker — have successfully navigated the route.

However, the situation remains tense. According to officials, at least 12 Indian vessels and several foreign ships carrying cargo for India are still stranded in the Gulf region due to operational and security challenges.

Despite the uncertainty, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent disruptions to India’s fuel supply chain.

The statement came after the court issued an award on May 15 related to the “maximum pondage” issue under the treaty framework.

Responding to media queries, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), said India had never accepted the legitimacy of the arbitration body.

People-to-people connections continue to remain an important pillar of the relationship as well.

The Netherlands is home to more than 90,000 non-resident Indians and people of Indian origin, along with over 200,000 members of the Suriname-Hindustani community. Around 3,500 Indian students are also currently studying at Dutch universities.

Officials said the vessel has 21 foreign crew members onboard and is expected to arrive at Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat, on Saturday.

The second vessel, NV Sunshine, safely crossed the Strait at around 9:30 am on Thursday. The tanker is expected to reach the New Mangaluru Port by May 18.

According to officials, the extradition operation was carried out jointly by the CBI, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Delhi Police.

Main Accused in NDPS Drug Racket

Prabhdeep Singh was wanted in connection with a case registered at the Special Cell Police Station in New Delhi under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Investigators had earlier recovered a substantial quantity of narcotic substances in the case and arrested several co-accused linked to the network.

Officials said Prabhdeep Singh was the main organiser of the international narcotics racket and had been absconding for a long time to evade arrest.

Govt Assures No Shortage Of Fuel Or LPG

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas clarified that India currently has adequate reserves of crude oil, petrol, diesel and LPG despite disruptions in global energy markets.

Sharma said there have been no incidents of fuel shortages or dry-outs at retail outlets across the country. “Our refineries are operating at full capacity and LPG supplies for domestic cooking purposes are being maintained smoothly,” she said.

She also urged citizens to avoid panic buying and assured that the government is continuously monitoring the evolving situation in West Asia.

According to officials, more than 1.26 crore LPG cylinders were delivered to households in the last three days against 1.14 crore bookings. Auto LPG sales also crossed 762 tonnes during the same period.

At the same briefing, Randhir Jaiswal said the government is in constant touch with authorities in the Middle East to ensure the safety of Indian nationals amid the regional conflict.
