In a sudden move, the military in Benin has ousted President Patrice Talon, taking control of the government. This marks the latest in a series of coups shaking West Africa, raising concerns over regional stability.
Soldiers stage a coup in Benin
New Delhi: The army has suddenly captured power in the West African country of Benin. A group of soldiers issued a statement on the country's state TV announcing the dissolution of the current government and the removal of powers from leaders, including President Patrice Talon.
This group called itself the 'Military Committee for Refoundation' and announced it would take control of the country. Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri has been appointed chairman of this committee.
No official information has been received yet about President Patrice Talon. Regarding his safety, it has been said that he is safe, but his actual situation is unclear after the army seized power.
State TV and radio signals were cut off immediately after the coup, making information on the president's condition difficult to obtain.
The coup in Benin is the latest in a series of military coups in West Africa. Last month, former President Umaro Emballo was removed from power in Guinea-Bissau in a military coup. This is the ninth coup in the region since 2020.
Benin gained independence from France in 1960. After independence the country saw several coups. The country gained political stability following the rule of Marxist–Leninist leader Mathieu Kerekou in 1991. He changed the name of the country to 'People's Republic of Benin.'
President Talon had been in power since 2016 and was due to step down after presidential elections in April next year. His closest ally and candidate, Romuald Vadagni, had public support. Talon had recently increased his tenure from five years to seven years.
This coup in Benin highlights political instability in West Africa. The soldiers have seized power and influenced the country's political process, while the public and the international community continue to monitor the event.
