Shreyas sustained the injury while attempting to take a catch of Alex Carey last Saturday leading to ICU treatment. Iyer is now recovering in Sydney and will return to India when gets medical clearance to fly.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a medical bulletin on Shreyas Iyer after his injury in the third and final ODI against Australia in Sydney. The batter sustained a “blunt injury to his abdomen” while fielding, resulting in internal bleeding. The BCCI on Saturday confirmed that the bleeding was immediately stopped following a minor procedure.
The BCCI further stated, "Shreyas' condition is now stable and he is recovering well. The BCCI medical team, including experts from Sydney and India, are satisfied with his improvement and he has been discharged from the hospital today. The BCCI expresses its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Kouroush Haghighi and his team in Sydney, as well as Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, who ensured Shreyas received the best possible treatment. Shreyas will remain in Sydney for further treatment and will return to India when he is fit to fly."
The 30-year-old Iyer is currently playing only ODIs. He has been away from Test cricket for the past six months due to a back problem and has recently been excluded from T20 matches. Iyer recently played a brilliant innings of 61 runs in the second ODI against Australia. Shreyas has been discharged from the hospital, but it is still not clear when he will be able to return to the field.
