People are celebrating Diwali with traditional spirit and devotion

New Delhi/ 30 October 2016. The nation is celebrating festival of lights Diwali with great enthusiasm, zeal and fervour. 

The festival is celebrated in many ways in different regions of the country. Even though the traditions and customs are different, the central purpose of celebrating Diwali remains the same: Victory of good over evil and removal of darkness and despair from every life.

In a few states Diwali was celebrated on Saturday.

Kali Puja was performed in several states including West Bengal, Odisha, Tripura, Bihar and Jharkhand on Saturday.  

Diwali festivities 
The Diwali festivities go on for five days in many parts of the country. 

They begin on Dhanteras  when people buy jewelry and utensils and seek the blessings of Goddess Laxmi.

Choti Diwali is celebrated on the second day which is known as Roop Chaturdashi.

On the third day is Diwali when main prayer offerings are done to Godess Laxmi and Lord Ganesh to invoke prosperity.

And with the celebration of Bhai Dooj on fifth day, the festivities come to an end.    

The national capital is fully decked up to celebrate Diwali. 

People in large numbers are thronging various markets to buy candles, lamps, crackers, sweets and gifts for their near and dear ones.

The temples have been specially decorated for the occasion and many people are offering their prayers there. 

Delhi’s Akshardham Temple has been majestically lit up for the festival. 

Authorities have urged the people to celebrate Diwali in a safe and pollution-free manner. 

Security has been tightened at many public places in the capital.
