India reports 16,764 new COVID-19 cases, Omicron tally jumps to 1270

India on Friday recorded 16,764 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, which is 43 percent highest than Thursday's tally, according to the Health Ministry data released on Friday.

New Delhi: India on Friday recorded 16,764 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, which is 43 percent highest than Thursday's tally, according to the Health Ministry data released on Friday.

On Thursday a total of 13,154 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the country. As per the ministry, the total number of active cases stand at 91,361 cases, which is less than 1 per cent of total number of cases, while the death toll climbed to 4,81,080 with 220 new COVID fatalities reported in the last 24 hours, the data stated on Friday.

The number of recoveries rose to 3,42,66 363 as 7,585 more people recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours, the data mentioned. Daily positivity rate (1.34 per cent) is less than 2 per cent for last 88 days.

Weekly Positivity Rate (0.89 per cent) is less than 1 per cent for last 47 days. In Delhi ,the number of fresh COVID case has crossed the 1000-mark after 7 months, reaching 1,313 -- a 42 per cent rise over Thursday's figures.

The positivity rate touched 1.73 per cent, the health department data showed. However, no fresh COVID deaths were reported. Meanwhile, India logged 309 fresh Omicron infections, taking the total tally of such cases in the country to 1,270.

Maharashtra recorded the maximum number of 450 cases, followed by Delhi with 320 cases, Kerala 109 and Gujarat 97 cases. Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain, meanwhile, said Omicron is gradually spreading in the community and the variant has been found in 46 per cent of the latest samples analysed in the national capital.

The government has been continuously speeding up the vaccination drive across the country. According to the bulletin issued by the Ministry on Friday 67.78 Crore tests for COVID-19 have been done so far. “India has administered 144.54 cr doses of COVID-19 vaccine so far under the ongoing nationwide vaccination drive” the Ministry's data said.
