Patna: In a significant political development, Samrat Choudhary has become the new Chief Minister of Bihar on Tuesday, marking a major leadership transition in the state.
Choudhary’s elevation comes shortly after the resignation of outgoing Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who stepped down earlier in the day, bringing an end to his tenure amid shifting political alignments. The leadership change follows a crucial meeting of legislators from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), where Choudhary was unanimously chosen as the leader of the legislative party.

BJP to lead Bihar for first time
Nitish Kumar’s move to the Rajya Sabha and his resignation mark a structural shift in Bihar politics, with the Bharatiya Janata Party poised to lead the NDA government in the state for the first time. The NDA currently enjoys a comfortable majority in the 243-member assembly, ensuring a smooth transition.
Oath likely tomorrow
Samrat Choudhary is likely to take oath as the new Chief Minister on April 15 at Lok Bhawan, in a ceremony expected to be attended by senior leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
About Samrat Choudhary
Choudhary launched his political career in 1999 when he was appointed Agriculture Minister in the Rabri Devi-led Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) government, despite not being a member of either House of the state legislature at the time. His induction quickly became controversial due to questions regarding his age, eventually forcing him to step down.
Although many BJP leaders regard him as a strong contender, others remain wary of his past associations with rival parties such as the RJD and JD(U).
His political trajectory has also been overshadowed by the 1995 Tarapur case, which involved the killing of Congress candidate Sachchidanand Singh and his associates in a grenade attack during the Assembly elections.
