New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has appointed senior IAS officer Mandeep K Bhandari as its new chairperson, bringing a unique combination of medical expertise, administrative experience and governance leadership to one of India’s most important education institutions.
Bhandari’s appointment has attracted attention because of his unusual career journey. Before entering the Indian Administrative Service, he pursued medicine and earned recognition as an MBBS gold medallist. He later cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination and built a distinguished administrative career spanning more than two decades.
The appointment comes at a significant time for CBSE, which manages board examinations, school affiliations, curriculum frameworks and assessment systems for thousands of institutions across India and abroad. Bhandari takes charge as the education board continues to address concerns related to examination technology, digital evaluation and student grievance mechanisms.
According to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) order, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Bhandari’s appointment as CBSE chairperson. He succeeds Lokhande Prashant Sitaram, who was handling additional charge of the position.
Mandeep K Bhandari is a 2001-batch Indian Administrative Service officer from the AGMUT cadre. The cadre includes Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram and several Union Territories, including Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Before joining CBSE, Bhandari was serving as Principal Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, where he handled important administrative responsibilities related to governance and public service delivery.
Over his 25-year-long government career, Bhandari has worked across multiple departments and administrative roles, gaining experience in policy execution, institutional management and government coordination.
His professional journey includes assignments such as Joint Secretary, Additional Secretary, Deputy Commissioner, Additional Development Commissioner, Chief Administrative Officer, Additional Chief Executive Officer and Private Secretary to a Union Minister.
The most distinctive feature of Bhandari’s profile is his transition from medicine to civil services. Before becoming an IAS officer, Bhandari completed his MBBS education from Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, with academic links to Punjab University, Chandigarh. His profile highlights his medical qualifications and achievement as a gold medallist.
Unlike the conventional backgrounds often associated with senior bureaucrats, Bhandari entered public administration after training in healthcare and medicine. After clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination, he joined the IAS and moved into governance, eventually taking up leadership roles at district, Union Territory and central government levels.
