India Observes Public Holiday on Ambedkar Jayanti
New Delhi: The country is celebrating Ambedkar Jayanti today. April 14th has been declared a public holiday across the country to mark the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna B. R. Ambedkar. The central government has designated it a national holiday, resulting in a closure of many government and private institutions.
Government offices, courts, post offices, government schools and colleges, and public sector undertakings (PSUs) will remain closed across the country on Ambedkar Jayanti. Furthermore, according to the Reserve Bank of India's holiday calendar, banks will also be closed in most states. However, banking services may remain partially operational in some states.
The stock market will also be completely closed today. Trading will be suspended on both the BSE and NSE exchanges. There will be no transactions in the equity, derivatives, and SLB segments. Trading will resume on April 15th.
Although the morning session at the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will be closed, trading will continue from 5:00 PM to 11:55 PM. Commodity trading will be partially operational.
Bank branches will be closed in several major cities across the country, including Mumbai, Delhi, Lucknow, Kolkata, Chennai, and Bengaluru. This may result in customers having to wait a day for banking transactions.
However, digital banking services such as internet banking, mobile banking, ATMs, and UPI services will continue to function normally. Private offices, retail shops, and essential services will remain open as usual in most locations.
Major festivals like Baisakhi and Vishu are being celebrated in many parts of the country on this day, further enhancing its significance.
This is the last trading holiday of the month of April. The next holiday will be on May 1st for Maharashtra Day.
On the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti, people across the country paid tribute to Baba Saheb and remembered his contributions.
