New Delhi: In a significant legal blow to US President Donald Trump, the United States Supreme Court has ruled his tariff measures illegal, marking a major setback in his trade policy legacy. The top court upheld earlier lower court observations that Trump had exceeded his executive authority by imposing sweeping tariffs on multiple foreign trade partners.
The ruling comes after prolonged legal scrutiny of the tariff decisions introduced during Trump’s tenure. Lower courts had earlier concluded that the president overstepped his constitutional and statutory powers while enforcing broad-based tariffs on several countries. With the Supreme Court now affirming that view, the verdict effectively invalidates the contested measures.

Among the countries affected by Trump’s tariff policy was India. Initially, a 25 percent tariff was imposed on Indian goods. Later, citing concerns over India’s purchase of Russian oil, the tariff burden was increased by an additional 25 percent as a penalty, taking it to 50 percent.
However, following negotiations and a subsequent trade deal, the tariff rate was reportedly reduced to 18 percent. The Supreme Court’s ruling now raises broader questions about the legal standing of such trade actions and their long-term implications.
