New Delhi: Gopichand P Hinduja (GP Hinduja), chairman of the UK-based Hinduja Group, passed away in the UK on today on Tuesday. He was 85 years old. The head of this Indian-origin business family was known as a generational business magnate in the global business world and was among the world's richest people.

GP Hinduja assumed the chairmanship of the Hinduja Group after the death of his elder brother, Shrichand P. Hinduja (SP Hinduja), in May 2023. Following SP Hinduja's departure, GP Hinduja became the head of the family and group. Under his leadership, the Hinduja family maintained its top spot on the UK's wealth list (The Sunday Times Rich List 2025). According to the 2025 report, the Hinduja family's wealth exceeded £35 billion.

Hinduja Family and Indian Heritage

GP Hinduja was born in Mumbai (then Bombay) in January 1940. The Hinduja Group was founded by his father, P.D. Hinduja, in 1914. The family initially operated in Iran and later moved the group's headquarters to London in the late 1970s. GP Hinduja was also a British citizen.

Business Expansion and Diversification

The Hinduja Group's diversified businesses include mobility (Ashok Leyland), banking and finance (IndusInd Bank), oil and lubricants (Gulf Oil), digital technology (Hinduja Global Solutions), energy (Hinduja Renewables), and media (NXT Digital). The group also has operations in real estate, healthcare, and project development.

The family business is jointly owned by the four Hinduja brothers. GP Hinduja was based in London, while his younger brother Prakash lives in Monaco, and his youngest brother, Ashok Hinduja, oversees Indian operations from Mumbai.

GP Hinduja graduated from Jai Hind College in Mumbai and joined the family business in 1959. He is credited with transforming the Hinduja Group from an Indo-Middle East trading operation into a multi-billion dollar transnational conglomerate.

According to the Hinduja Group, two of his major decisions were crucial to the group's success: the acquisition of Gulf Oil in 1984 and the acquisition of Indian automaker Ashok Leyland in 1987. His business philosophy has been described as "common sense." He also received honorary doctorates from Westminster University and Richmond College, London.
