New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the Cabinet’s approval of the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III (GEC-III) scheme as a "big push" towards India’s goal of achieving 900 GW of non-fossil power capacity by 2035.

Approved by the Cabinet, the scheme is aimed at enabling the evacuation of up to 135 GW of renewable energy across states and Union Territories, while strengthening transmission infrastructure and expanding battery storage capacity.

135 GW Renewable Energy Evacuation

"Cleaner power. Stronger grids. More opportunities," PM Modi said in a post on X.

"The Cabinet decision on the Green Energy Corridor Phase III will ensure: 135 GW renewable energy evacuation. 50 GWh battery storage. Stronger power grids across States and UTs. More jobs in manufacturing, construction, and energy storage. Big push towards 900 GW non-fossil capacity by 2035," he added.

India’s total installed power capacity stood at 552 GW in July 2026, compared with 249 GW in 2014. Non-fossil capacity reached 300.50 GW as of July 31, 2026, which accounts for more than 54 per cent of the country’s total installed capacity.

Rs 1.86 Lakh Crore Project Outlay

Globally, India currently ranks third in installed renewable energy capacity. Its solar capacity reached 164.59 GW as of July 31, 2026, up from 2.8 GW in 2014.

Solar energy has emerged as the largest component of India’s renewable energy capacity. The country became the world’s second-largest solar growth market in 2025, adding more than 37 GW of capacity, compared with 34 GW added by the US.

The GEC-III scheme is targeted for completion by FY 2032-33 and has a total project outlay of Rs 1,86,405 crore.

Of this, Rs 1,36,378 crore will be allocated for developing Intra-State Transmission Systems (InSTS) under GEC-III, while Rs 50,000 crore will be used for 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

Battery Storage And Employment

The scheme provides for the deployment of 50 GWh of BESS at renewable energy developer or generator sites, or at other locations important for grid flexibility.

The storage systems are intended to help address renewable energy intermittency, transmission congestion, peak-hour curtailment and electricity demand during non-solar hours.

The initiative is also expected to support employment in the domestic energy storage sector through BESS manufacturing and deployment. It will create long-term skilled employment in areas including operations, maintenance and grid management across participating states.

The scheme involves total Central financial support of Rs 54,082 crore.
