Mumbai: Nestle India’s infant nutrition products have come under the scanner after the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) initiated legal proceedings over alleged violations linked to baby food products.

The action involves concerns related to product standards and promotional claims made for certain infant nutrition items. The development has brought renewed focus on safety regulations in the baby food sector.

FSSAI Raises Concerns Over Product Standards

According to the food safety regulator, one infant formula product manufactured by Nestle India did not meet the required standards for biotin content during laboratory testing.

The sample was examined again during the review process, following which FSSAI proceeded with legal action. Biotin, also known as Vitamin B7, is an important nutrient included in infant food formulations and its quantity is regulated under food safety guidelines.

Product Claims Also Under Regulatory Review

Apart from the quality-related issue, FSSAI has also raised objections over certain claims associated with two other infant nutrition products.

The regulator is examining whether product labels and promotional statements related to ingredients and benefits comply with existing rules for infant food advertising and packaging.
