Mumbai: Indian stock markets opened on a cautious note on Tuesday, October 13, as investors weighed elevated crude oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty and fresh inflation data. The movement in the Sensex and Nifty remained limited in early trade, with market participants closely tracking developments in the global energy market.

The BSE Sensex edged up 0.05% to 71,957.64, while the NSE Nifty 50 stood at 22,377.05 as of 9:17 am IST, according to Reuters. The muted opening followed a weak session on Monday, when both benchmark indices ended lower.

Brent Crude Oil Near $105

Crude oil prices remained a key concern for investors. Brent crude futures traded around $105 per barrel as markets assessed geopolitical risks in the Middle East alongside the possibility of increased Russian diesel supplies.

Higher crude prices can put pressure on Indian markets because the country relies heavily on imported oil. A sustained rise in energy costs can increase the import bill, affect the rupee, raise transportation expenses and add to inflationary pressures.

Investors are therefore watching oil price movements closely for potential effects on corporate margins, consumer demand and the broader economic outlook.

Inflation Data Adds to Market Concerns

India's retail inflation rose to 5.54% in September, higher than expected and closer to the Reserve Bank of India's 6% upper tolerance limit. The latest reading has increased concerns about price pressures and the possibility of further monetary tightening.

Higher inflation can influence interest-rate expectations, borrowing costs and investor appetite for equities. Markets are likely to remain sensitive to further economic data and signals about the direction of monetary policy.

IT Stocks and Global Cues in Focus

Sectoral performance remained mixed in early trade. Information technology shares provided some support, while smaller companies faced selling pressure. Eight of the 16 major sectors tracked by Reuters recorded gains at the opening stage.

Investors are also monitoring global equity movements, currency fluctuations and geopolitical developments for further direction.

For now, crude oil prices, inflation trends and foreign investor activity remain important factors shaping market sentiment. Traders should distinguish between early-session movements and the final closing levels as market conditions can change throughout the day.
