Stock Market Today: Bulls Back In Action! Sensex Nears 77,500, Nifty Above 24,200

Indian stock markets opened on a strong note as Sensex surged over 550 points and Nifty crossed the 24,200 mark. Positive global cues and strong institutional buying boosted investor confidence.

New Delhi: Indian benchmark indices witnessed a strong opening on August 20, 2026, supported by positive global market trends and improved investor sentiment.

The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 558.77 points, or 0.72%, to open at 77,468.45. Meanwhile, the NSE Nifty 50 gained 147.15 points to start trading at 24,225.45. In the previous session, the Sensex had closed at 76,909.68, while the Nifty ended at 24,078.30.

Broader Markets Also Trade In Green

The broader market indices also reflected positive momentum during early trade. The BSE Midcap Select Index gained 129.54 points, while the BSE Smallcap Select Index climbed 71.01 points, or 0.78%, to trade at 9,148.12.

Market breadth remained positive, with a majority of stocks trading higher. On the NSE, around 2,148 stocks advanced, 600 declined, and 90 stocks remained unchanged in early trading.

Gift Nifty Signals Positive Start

Gift Nifty, considered an early indicator of Nifty 50 performance, pointed towards a mildly positive opening. It opened 110.5 points higher at 24,200.50 compared with its previous close of 24,090.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained net buyers and purchased Indian equities worth Rs 407.99 crore on August 19. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) also continued buying, investing Rs 3,973.72 crore in equities.

Asian Markets Rally on Global Optimism

Asian markets traded higher following gains on Wall Street. Investor sentiment improved after reports that the US may consider buying back longer-term Treasury securities to reduce borrowing costs.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 493.58 points, or 0.76%, to trade at 65,820. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 277.93 points, or 1.09%.

South Korea’s Kospi jumped 373.01 points, or 5.42%, while Shanghai’s SSE Composite index edged up 10.81 points.
