Mumbai: India’s benchmark stock market indices opened higher on Thursday, October 15, with the BSE Sensex rising more than 300 points and the Nifty 50 moving above the 22,700 mark. Buying interest in select banking and technology stocks supported the early gains, while IDBI Bank remained in focus following a major development in the government’s disinvestment plans.
The positive opening came despite weak signals from several Asian markets and concerns over global inflation and interest rates. Investors also tracked quarterly earnings, crude oil prices and foreign investor activity for clues about the market’s next move.
The Sensex advanced by more than 300 points in early trade, while the Nifty 50 climbed above 22,700. The gains offered some relief to investors after the benchmark indices closed lower in the previous session amid profit-booking and concerns over rising inflation.
Market sentiment remained sensitive to international developments, particularly higher-than-expected US inflation, which has fuelled concerns about the possibility of further interest-rate increases by the US Federal Reserve.
IDBI Bank shares attracted attention after the Union Cabinet approved the sale of a controlling stake in the lender to Fairfax Financial Holdings. The proposed transaction is valued at approximately $5.56 billion and involves the sale of a combined 60.72% stake held by the government and Life Insurance Corporation of India.
However, the stock came under selling pressure on Thursday after a sharp rally in the previous session. Investors appeared to book profits following the announcement, highlighting how a major corporate development can trigger short-term volatility even when the news is viewed positively over the longer term.
The government’s offer price is Rs 81 per share. Analysts have suggested that the change in ownership could support a potential valuation reassessment over time, depending on the bank’s growth, profitability and future performance.
Technology and financial stocks were among the sectors supporting the market’s advance. Investors tracked quarterly earnings from major IT companies, including Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services and HCLTech, for indications of demand and business growth.
Select private-sector banking stocks also traded higher, contributing to the strength in the benchmark indices. Reliance Industries was another stock in focus during the session.
At the same time, market performance remained uneven. While several large-cap stocks advanced, some smaller companies and individual stocks faced selling pressure.
Investors will continue to monitor corporate earnings, global inflation trends, crude oil prices, the rupee’s movement against the US dollar and foreign institutional investor flows. Developments around US monetary policy may also influence risk appetite in emerging markets such as India.
Although the higher opening indicated improved buying interest, market direction could remain volatile as investors assess earnings and global economic signals.
