New Delhi: Indian stock markets opened on a cautious note on Wednesday, October 14, as the Sensex slipped more than 60 points and the Nifty 50 tested the 22,680 level after the previous session's strong rally. Persistent foreign investor outflows, elevated crude oil prices and uncertainty over global economic conditions continued to weigh on investor sentiment.
The subdued opening followed a strong recovery on Tuesday, when both benchmark indices gained around 1.5% amid buying in information technology stocks and optimism over corporate earnings. Investors are now assessing whether the latest rebound can sustain itself amid continuing domestic and international headwinds.
In early trade on Wednesday, the BSE Sensex declined by more than 60 points, while the NSE Nifty 50 hovered around the 22,680 mark. The market's movement reflected cautious sentiment after Tuesday's sharp gains.
On October 13, the Sensex climbed 1,109.10 points, or 1.54%, to close at 73,033.78. The Nifty advanced 358.60 points, or 1.60%, to settle at 22,721.95. Information technology stocks led much of the recovery, supported by strong earnings-related buying.
Elevated crude oil prices remain a major concern for Indian equities. Brent crude was trading around $107 per barrel, raising concerns about India's import bill, inflation and pressure on the country's external balance.
Persistent foreign portfolio investor (FPI) selling has also been weighing on domestic markets. According to Reuters, foreign investors sold Indian equities for a 13th consecutive session, while domestic institutional investors continued to provide support through their purchases.
Higher oil prices and continued foreign fund outflows could keep investors cautious, even as domestic earnings provide support to selected sectors.
Investors are likely to track movements in crude oil prices, foreign fund flows, quarterly earnings and global market cues for further direction. Corporate results and developments in international markets could influence sector-specific trading opportunities.
After Tuesday's strong rally, the key question is whether buying interest will return to sustain the recovery or whether external pressures will trigger further volatility.
Market movements remain uncertain, and investors should assess their risk tolerance and financial objectives before making investment decisions.
