Mumbai: The race to find the next leader of the Tata Group has gained momentum after Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran decided not to seek another term when his current tenure ends in February 2027.
Chandrasekaran’s decision has sparked discussions around succession planning at Bombay House, the headquarters of one of India’s largest business groups. With Tata Trusts holding a major stake in Tata Sons, the selection of the next chairman will involve balancing multiple stakeholders and maintaining stability across the conglomerate.
Among the names being discussed in corporate circles is TV Narendran, the Managing Director and CEO of Tata Steel. While Tata Sons has not officially announced any successor, Narendran’s name has gained attention due to his decades-long association with the Tata Group and his experience in handling large-scale operations.
At 61, Narendran represents the kind of leadership profile Tata has traditionally preferred — a leader with deep institutional knowledge, operational expertise and an understanding of the group’s values.
TV Narendran is one of the most experienced executives within the Tata ecosystem. An engineering graduate from the National Institute of Technology, Trichy, and an IIM Calcutta alumnus, he joined Tata Steel in 1988.
During his nearly four-decade career with Tata, Narendran has worked across several key areas including sales, marketing, international business and corporate leadership.
He played an important role in expanding Tata Steel’s operations in Southeast Asia before becoming Managing Director of Tata Steel India in 2013.
Unlike N Chandrasekaran, who rose through the technology and services business at TCS, Narendran comes from the manufacturing and industrial side of the Tata Group.
During his leadership at Tata Steel, he focused on improving financial performance, strengthening domestic operations and managing challenges in global markets.
The Tata Sons chairman role requires more than managing individual companies. The position involves strategic decision-making, capital allocation and maintaining coordination among multiple businesses ranging from automobiles and steel to technology, aviation and financial services.
Narendran’s experience in handling complex industrial operations makes him a potential fit for the role.
The selection of Tata Sons chairman follows a structured process rather than a simple appointment. A selection committee involving representatives from Tata Trusts, the Tata Sons board and an independent member plays a key role in choosing the next leader.
The final decision will be closely watched as the Tata Group prepares for its next phase of growth and leadership.
