Kohima: At least 19 people have died in Nagaland after allegedly consuming suspected spurious liquor, triggering a major investigation into the source and distribution network of the alcohol. Authorities have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the circumstances behind the deaths.

The incident has raised serious concerns over the circulation of illegal and unverified liquor in the state, where prohibition laws are in place.

Deaths reported from Mokokchung and Tuensang

According to officials, deaths were reported from Mokokchung and Tuensang districts. Eight people died in Mokokchung, while 11 fatalities were reported from Tuensang after suspected consumption of illicit liquor.

Authorities are now collecting evidence to determine whether the liquor contained toxic substances that led to the deaths.

Samples of the suspected liquor have been sent for forensic examination, and the final cause of death will be confirmed after medical and laboratory reports.

SIT formed to identify those responsible

The Nagaland Police has constituted an SIT to investigate the supply chain behind the suspected spurious liquor. The team will look into how the alcohol was produced, distributed and sold despite restrictions on liquor trade.

Officials said investigators are examining multiple leads and further action will be taken based on evidence gathered during the probe.

Arrests made, liquor seized

As part of the investigation, police have arrested several people suspected to be linked with the illegal liquor network. Authorities have also seized thousands of bottles during searches conducted in different areas.

Police have appealed to people to avoid consuming unknown or unlabelled alcoholic products and advised those showing symptoms after consuming liquor to seek immediate medical help.
