Big Seizures in Tamil Nadu as Authorities Tighten Election Surveillance
Chennai: Election expenditure monitoring and enforcement measures have been intensified in the state in view of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Elections. As of March 18, 2026, various agencies have seized illegal material worth ₹42.65 crore (approximately $1.2 million USD) by the Chief Electoral Officer.
According to the data released, the seized items include ₹2.37 crore in cash, ₹0.18 crore in liquor, ₹2.88 crore in drugs and narcotics, ₹16.42 crore in precious metals, and ₹20.80 crore in freebies and other items. Officials say this action is being taken to ensure a fair election process.
Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik stated that surveillance has been tightened to prevent the flow of illegal money, distribution of freebies to influence voters, and other prohibited activities during the elections. To this end, better coordination has been established between various enforcement agencies.
The state administration has appealed to all political parties and candidates to strictly adhere to the election code of conduct. The public has also been asked to immediately report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
