Punjab: A man was killed during an attempted detonation on railway tracks in Patiala district late Monday night, after a low-intensity blast-like sound alerted residents and security agencies. The incident occurred along the Rajpura, Ambala railway line, raising fresh concerns about railway safety in the region.

Punjab Police identified the deceased as Jagroop Singh, a resident of Panjwar village. Officials stated that the explosive device did not fully detonate, and the detonator itself was destroyed on the tracks, killing the suspect instantly.

Train Services Affected, Probe Underway

The incident disrupted train movement on the route, with Northern Railway confirming that services were impacted. Authorities said details regarding affected trains would be released after assessing the situation.

Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police Varun Sharma said a joint investigation involving Railway Police and other agencies is underway. Preliminary findings suggest an attempted detonation that failed to achieve its intended impact.

Investigators recovered a SIM card and other suspicious materials from the site. Forensic teams have been deployed to examine the evidence and determine the nature of the explosive device and possible motives behind the act.

Earlier Rail Blast Raises Concerns

The latest development comes months after a similar explosion near Sirhind railway station on January 24, ahead of Republic Day celebrations. That incident damaged a section of the track and injured a goods train loco pilot, highlighting vulnerabilities in railway infrastructure security.

Separate Firing Incident in Batala

In a separate incident, the two people were killed and one injured in a firing at Bhoma village on Monday night. According to the sources, six assailants arrived on motorcycles and opened fire indiscriminately. The deceased were identified as Kashmir Singh, 40, and Jugraj Singh, 18, while another individual remains critically injured.

Political Reactions Over Law and Order

Reacting to the incidents, Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring expressed concern over deteriorating law and order. He warned that such events threaten the state’s stability and accused the government of failing to address rising security challenges.
