Bihar: A suspected custodial death in Bihar’s West Champaran district has triggered action against six police personnel after a 25-year-old man died while being taken to a police station. The incident has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding his death, with his family rejecting the police account and demanding a high-level investigation.
The suspended personnel include two sub-inspectors and four constables, according to an official statement issued by Bettiah police on Monday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Dilshad Ansari, son of Akhbar Ansari, who lived in Auraiya, under the Banuchhapar police station area in Bettiah.
The suspended officers are Sub-Inspectors Ravi Shankar Kumar and Arun Kumar, along with constables Saudagar Kumar Yadav, Raj Kumar Rishi, Kundan Kumar and Suman Kumar. All six were attached to Sahodra police station in West Champaran.
Dilshad was an accused in an NDPS Act case registered on August 8, 2025, under case number 65/25.
According to the police statement, Dilshad was arrested from Banuchhapar and was being taken to Sahodra police station when he allegedly jumped from the moving vehicle, sustaining serious injuries.
Police said he was initially taken to the subdivisional hospital in Narkatiaganj before being referred to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Bettiah. Doctors there declared him brought dead.
Following the incident, the six personnel were suspended with immediate effect.
Dilshad’s wife, Nagma Khatoon, has disputed the police version of events and sought an investigation into her husband’s death.
She alleged that a police team arrived at their home around 2 am on Monday and took him into custody, assuring the family that he would be released by morning after questioning.
According to Nagma, the family later received a call from Banuchhapar police station asking them to reach GMCH, with the caller reportedly saying that Dilshad had fallen ill. Upon reaching the hospital, the family found him dead.
The family has demanded a high-level inquiry to establish the circumstances in which Dilshad died. The police statement cited his alleged jump from the moving vehicle as the cause of the injuries, while the family has questioned that explanation.
The circumstances surrounding the death remain disputed.
