New Delhi: The experience of making and receiving calls on your mobile is about to change completely. Soon, when someone calls you, their name will appear on your screen along with their number. Telecom companies have begun testing this new service, and it is expected to be implemented nationwide by March 2026. The department is implementing this new feature to enhance consumer security and transparency. According to sources in the Department of Telecommunications, some telecom companies have started a pilot project of the CNAP service in the Haryana circle. Other companies will also soon conduct trials in the same circle. The department has instructed all companies to begin preparations for this feature. During the pilot project, companies will be required to send weekly progress reports to the government. The government will resolve technical or network-related issues based on these reports. Under the new feature, the caller's name will be visible on the receiver's mobile phone. This will allow the user to know who is calling before even answering the call. This initiative will help curb fraudulent calls, spam, and online fraud. The Department of Telecommunications states that after successful testing, the service will be rolled out nationwide in a phased manner. The goal is to fully implement it by March 31, 2026. In February 2024, TRAI recommended that this service be offered only to interested consumers. However, both TRAI and the Department agree that it should be made available to all users. However, this feature will only work on mobile phones with 4G and 5G networks, due to technical limitations in 2G and 3G networks. Sources within the Department of Telecommunications say that this technology will significantly curb fraudulent calls, fraud, and cybercrimes. Consumers often receive calls from unknown numbers, which attempt to commit bank fraud or steal personal information. The implementation of CNAP is expected to reduce such cases. This service will increase mobile user confidence and make India's telecom networks more secure and transparent. Experts believe this feature is an important step toward increasing mobile user security and digital transparency. Now, people will be able to identify the caller before they even answer the call, potentially reducing fraud and scams. This new service will allow mobile users to identify the caller, even if the number isn't saved. This technology will work similarly to existing caller ID apps like Truecaller, but it will operate directly through the telecom system, ensuring greater data security.
