New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested the Project Director of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in Shillong along with two private individuals in connection with an alleged Rs 12 lakh bribery case.
The arrested accused have been identified as Aanand Singh Chouhan, Project Director (PIU), NHAI Shillong, and private individuals Punit Agarwal and Manish Agarwal.
According to the CBI, the case was registered on July 1 based on a complaint alleging that Chouhan demanded an undue advantage of Rs 12 lakh from a contractor for processing an outstanding bill of Rs 13.38 crore.
Investigators said the accused official instructed the complainant to pay Rs 4 lakh as an advance. The complainant was allegedly directed to hand over the money to Punit Agarwal in Guwahati, who then instructed that the cash be delivered to Manish Agarwal.
The CBI laid a trap and caught one of the private accused red-handed while allegedly demanding and accepting Rs 4 lakh from the complainant.
Following the successful trap operation, the agency arrested Chouhan along with both private individuals and conducted searches at their respective premises.
The CBI said further investigation into the alleged bribery network is continuing.
