Bhubaneswar: A special CBI court in Bhubaneswar has convicted and sentenced a former Assistant Superintendent of Post Offices to four years of rigorous imprisonment in a bribery case.

The accused, identified as Radha Krushna Sahoo, was serving as Assistant Superintendent of Post Offices in charge of the Baripada Central Sub-Division at the time of the offence. Along with the prison term, the court also imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh.

Bribe Demand for Postal Job

According to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the case was registered on February 4, 2014, following a complaint that the official demanded a bribe in exchange for facilitating a job appointment.

Investigators said the accused sought ₹2 lakh from the complainant to help him secure a position as a Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) in the Debsole Branch Post Office. Later, he allegedly asked the complainant to pay ₹50,000 as an initial amount.

When the complainant expressed difficulty in arranging the full amount, the official reportedly agreed to accept ₹20,000 as the first installment.

CBI Trap Operation

Acting on the complaint, the CBI organised a trap operation on February 6, 2014. The accused was caught red-handed while allegedly demanding and accepting ₹20,000 from the complainant at his rented residence in Baliganja. Following the arrest, the agency carried out a detailed investigation into the matter.

Chargesheet and Court Verdict

After completing the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet against the accused on June 25, 2014. The case proceeded to trial, during which evidence and witness testimonies were examined by the court.

Upon conclusion of the trial, the special CBI court found the accused guilty of corruption and delivered the conviction, sentencing him to four years of rigorous imprisonment along with a monetary penalty.
