Ranchi: The Jharkhand Crime Investigation Department (CID) on Monday arrested former Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) Chairperson L Khiangte in connection with alleged irregularities in the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination, officially known as the Jharkhand General Graduate Level Combined Competitive Examination (JGGLCCE).
Khiangte was arrested from his residence in Ranchi. The Jharkhand CID is expected to produce him before a court later in the day.
The arrest marks a significant development amid large-scale protests by students demanding an independent CBI probe into alleged irregularities in the JSSC-CGL examination and wider reforms in the functioning of JPSC and JSSC.
The protests have spread across Ranchi, Dhanbad, Hazaribagh, Bokaro, and other districts, with thousands of students taking to the streets. Demonstrators have organised marches towards the Jharkhand Vidhan Sabha, staged sit-ins, and demanded a transparent and independent investigation into the examination process.
The Hemant Soren-led government had agreed to hold talks with the protesting students but refused to cancel the CGL examination scheduled for September this year. The state government maintained that the recruitment process followed all legal and procedural safeguards.

The Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level (JSSC CGL) examination is one of the largest recruitment drives conducted by the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC), the state-level recruitment authority responsible for selecting candidates for various government positions.

The written examination covers subjects such as General Studies, Jharkhand General Knowledge, General Science, Mathematics, Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability, along with Hindi and English language proficiency.
Candidates who qualify in the written examination are required to undergo document verification, where their educational qualifications, identity documents, reservation certificates, and other eligibility requirements are examined.
The comprehensive syllabus is designed to assess a candidate’s awareness of Jharkhand’s socio-economic conditions, problem-solving abilities, and overall suitability for public service.
The controversy surrounding the JSSC CGL examination intensified following allegations of irregularities in the recruitment process.
