New Delhi: A 30-year-old woman was allegedly abducted and gang-raped inside a moving sleeper bus in northwest Delhi’s Saraswati Vihar area late Monday night, police officials said. The accused, identified as the driver and conductor of the bus, have been arrested and sent to judicial custody.

According to investigators, the incident took place when the woman was returning home after work. She is employed at a factory in Mangolpuri and lives with her family in Pitampura.

Woman Allegedly Pulled Inside Bus

Police said the woman had travelled part of the route in an e-rickshaw before continuing on foot near the B-block bus stand in the Saraswati Vihar area.

In her complaint, the survivor alleged that a sleeper bus stopped near the bus stand while she was walking. She approached a man standing near the vehicle to ask for the time. The man allegedly gestured for her to come closer and then forcibly pulled her inside the bus.

The woman told police that two men sexually assaulted her while the bus continued moving for several kilometres towards Nangloi.

Assault Allegedly Took Place During Journey

Investigators said the woman alleged that the assault continued inside the moving bus before she was abandoned near Nangloi Metro station. After the incident, the survivor contacted the police, who reached the location and shifted her for medical examination to Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital.

Delhi Police subsequently registered a First Information Report (FIR) under charges related to gang rape and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Driver, Conductor Arrested

Police identified the accused as Umesh, the bus driver, and Ramendra, the conductor. Both were arrested during the investigation and later produced before a court, which sent them to judicial custody. Officials said the sleeper bus, registered in Bihar, has been seized for forensic examination.

CCTV Footage And Forensic Evidence Under Review

Investigators are examining CCTV footage collected from multiple points along the route travelled by the bus to reconstruct the sequence of events.

Forensic teams were also called to inspect the vehicle and collect evidence from inside the bus. A police officer involved in the investigation said the bus windows were covered with curtains, making visibility from outside difficult. Police said further investigation is underway and additional evidence is being analysed.
