ED raids senior cop, businessman's homes in Kolkata
Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted simultaneous raids at the residences of a senior officer of Kolkata Police and a businessman in different parts of Kolkata in connection with a money laundering case on Sunday.
ED officers said that, accompanied by central police forces, they conducted a raid at the Ballygunge residence of Shantanu Sinha Biswas, Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata Police, in connection with the case.
"The raid is being conducted in connection with a case registered under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. We have certain questions regarding the police officer's alleged link with a person from a construction company. At the moment, the police officer is not at home and we are trying to get in touch with him," official said.
Earlier Raid
Earlier, the ED had conducted searches at multiple premises linked to leaders of the Trinamool Congress, intensifying the political atmosphere in the state ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections.
Among those covered were MLA Debashish Kumar, who is contesting from the Rashbehari assembly seat, and Miraj Shah, who proposed the candidature of Mamata Banerjee from the Bhabanipur constituency.
Multiple Locations Searched
Officials carried out searches at Kumar’s residence on Padmapukur Road in South Kolkata, his office in Ballygunge, and other related locations. Shah’s residence in Bhabanipur was also searched for several hours.
While there has been no official statement from the tax authorities, sources indicated that the searches are linked to alleged irregularities, including a land-related matter. The Enforcement Directorate had earlier questioned Kumar in connection with a separate investigation.
