New Delhi: The death of a young woman in Greater Noida’s Jalpura area has triggered outrage and grief, with her family alleging dowry harassment and murder by her in-laws just months after her marriage.

The deceased, identified as Deepika Nagar, was a postgraduate and was reportedly well-known in her village for her academic background and personality. According to her family, she had been married with great celebration and significant expense in the hope of ensuring a happy future.

However, relatives claim her married life soon turned distressing.

Family Alleges Repeated Dowry Demands

According to the victim’s family, Deepika’s husband and in-laws allegedly began demanding a luxury car, furniture and cash amounting to nearly Rs 50 lakh after the wedding.

Her family alleged that she was repeatedly harassed and pressured over the demands. They claimed Deepika had informed them about physical assault and mental harassment in the days leading up to her death.

Relatives also alleged that the harassment intensified after the dowry demands were not fulfilled.

Father Claims Daughter Called Hours Before Death

Deepika’s father said he received a distress call from his daughter on May 17, during which she allegedly told him that she was being assaulted and pressured for money and expensive items.

Following the call, family members reportedly visited her matrimonial home in an attempt to resolve the dispute peacefully.

However, later that night, the family received information that Deepika had allegedly fallen from the terrace of the house. She was rushed to hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Police Register Case, Arrest Two

Police have registered a case under sections related to dowry death and other serious charges. Officials confirmed that the woman’s husband Ritik and father-in-law Manoj have been arrested.

Authorities said efforts are underway to locate other accused family members named in the complaint. The investigation is ongoing, and police are collecting statements from relatives and examining all circumstances surrounding the death.

The incident has once again raised concerns over dowry-related harassment and violence against women despite strict legal provisions against the practice.
