J&K: Two terror associates arrested with arms in Shopian

Srinagar: Security forces arrested two militant associates in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district, officials said on Thursday.

They said the two were arrested by a joint team of forces during a cordon and a search operation which was launched in the Baskuchan area following an input about a militant movement.

The two were identified as Irfan Bashir and Uzair Salam

“Arms and ammunition including two AK rifles were recovered from their possession,” an official said, adding that the two were being questioned for further leads.

There was no word from police on these two arrests.

Earlier Incident
Few days back Security forces shot dead an unidentified militant in an ongoing operation in Awantipora sub-district of south Kashmir.

Police said a gunbattle erupted in the early hours on Thursday at Nader Tral during a cordon-and-search operation which was launched following an input about militants' presence.

Police Version
"One terrorist has been killed," said a senior police officer. "The operation is going on," he added.
Earlier, in a post on X, police said an encounter broke out at Nader, Tral area of Awantipora.

Second Gunbattle
This is the second gunbattle in South Kashmir since Tuesday. On May 13, three local militants of Lashkar-e-Taiba were killed in an encounter with security forces in Shopian district. The slain also included Shahid Kuttay, a local commander of the Lashkar.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Srinagar
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in Srinagar on Thursday, marking his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir since the launch of Operation Sindoor.

The visit comes in the wake of a recently announced ceasefire between India and Pakistan on May 10, following days of intense cross-border skirmishes and artillery exchanges that resulted in several casualties and infrastructural damage along the Line of Control (LoC).

In Poonch, the Congress leader met the families of the victims and assured them that he is with them in this difficult time. During this, Rahul Gandhi also met school children and encouraged them by saying that he loves them very much.
