Imphal: Tensions escalated in Manipur's capital Imphal after a protest rally turned violent, leading to the arrest of at least 21 individuals, police confirmed on Monday. The incident occurred on April 18 in Imphal West district during a torch rally organised to protest a recent bomb attack that killed two children.

According to officials, the situation spiralled out of control as sections of the crowd engaged in aggressive acts against security personnel deployed along the route.

Stone-Pelting and Petrol Bomb Attacks

Police said the rally, which moved along the Imphal–Jiribam road from Patsoi to Sagolband, witnessed large-scale violence. Protesters allegedly hurled stones, petrol bombs, and other projectiles at security forces. Catapults and boulders were also reportedly used during the clashes.

Vehicles belonging to security forces were vandalised in the unrest. Three personnel from the 232 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force sustained serious injuries during the confrontation.

Arrests and Investigation Underway

Authorities have taken 21 individuals into custody in connection with the violence. Police said further investigations are ongoing to identify additional suspects involved in the incident.

In a separate development, a 23-year-old individual from Imphal East district was arrested for allegedly posting provocative content on social media and inciting unrest. Officials confirmed that the accused is linked to a local group, and his role is being examined as part of the broader investigation.

Widespread Protests Across Valley Districts

The unrest comes amid growing public anger over the recent bomb attack that claimed the lives of two children. In response, thousands of residents took to the streets across several valley districts, staging demonstrations and night rallies.

Protests were reported in areas including Koirengei, Hatta Golpati, Kakching, and Mayai Lambi. Clashes between protesters and security forces were also reported in multiple locations, including Uripok and Khabam Lamkhai.
