A dramatic turn came during the arrest when Vipin snatched the gun of a sub-inspector during the police action and tried to escape. During this, he also fired bullets at the police team, in response to which the police shot him in the leg in self-defense.
The injured Vipin was immediately admitted to the hospital, from where he was sent to judicial custody after recovering.
The horror of this case is revealed by the video that went viral on social media. In one video, Vipin and a woman can be seen brutally beating Nikki, where they are seen dragging her by her hair.
In another video clip, Nikki is seen burning in the fire and falling down the stairs. After these brutal scenes, she was taken to the hospital on Thursday night, where she died.
The victim's father, Bhikhari Singh, said that both his daughters were married in 2016 in the Bhati family. The demand for dowry started soon after the marriage. First a Scorpio car was demanded, then a Bullet motorcycle, and finally Rs 36 lakh in cash was demanded.
Bhikhari Singh said that many panchayats were held in this matter, but no solution was found. Demanding strict action from the Yogi government, he said that if justice is not given, they will sit on a hunger strike.
Nikki's mother and sister have also demanded strict punishment against all the people on the in-laws' side. They say that this murder was a well-planned conspiracy in which the whole family was involved.
The police have registered an FIR in the case under sections 103(1) (murder), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and 61(2) (life imprisonment or attempt to commit a serious offense) of the Indian Penal Code.
The police are investigating, and the victim's family has been provided security. The incident not only highlights the social evil of dowry but also raises serious questions about women's safety and the justice system.
