Quarrels drove the boyfriend to commit a crime
Kanpur: In a chilling crime that has stunned both police and social media users, a man has strangled his 20-year-old girlfriend, stuffed body in a suitcase, and clicked a selfie before dumping into the Yamuna river. According to police, the victim had developed a relationship with the accused through Instagram.
Their friendship soon turned into a romantic affair, but frequent quarrels strained the bond.
Investigators believe one such argument led the accused to commit the crime.
The accused allegedly strangled the young woman at a rented accommodation in Kanpur. He then placed her body inside a large suitcase. In a disturbing detail, police say the man clicked a selfie with the suitcase before attempting to dispose of it.
Disposal of the body
With the help of an accomplice, the accused transported the suitcase nearly 95 km from Kanpur to Banda district. There, they allegedly dumped the suitcase into the Yamuna river in an effort to erase evidence of the murder.
The police, however, were tipped off and managed to track the suspects. Divers have been deployed in the Yamuna to recover the suitcase and confirm the victim’s identity.
2 men arrested
Kanpur police have arrested two men in connection with the case the prime accused, identified as the victim’s boyfriend, and his associate who helped move the suitcase.
Suraj Uttam and his friend were taken into custody on Thursday and, during questioning, confessed to the crime.
As per the senior police officials, the accused not only killed the woman but also acted in a cold-blooded manner afterward. He even glorified his gruesome act by clicking a selfie showcasing shocking disregard for human life.
Investigation continues
A case of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered. Police are also investigating whether the accused had attempted to circulate the selfie or use it on social media.
Meanwhile, the victim’s family has been informed, and they have demanded swift justice.
