New Delhi: Former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh has been arrested in connection with the alleged hurried cremation of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder victim. The arrest came after a fresh complaint filed by the victim’s father, who accused Ghosh and others of forcing the early cremation of his daughter’s body.

Police said Ghosh was arrested in Odisha on Thursday on charges including destruction of evidence, criminal conspiracy and forcing an individual to carry out an act against their will.

Fresh Probe Ordered Into Cremation Process

The arrest follows a renewed investigation into allegations surrounding the cremation of the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor, whose death at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College in August 2024 triggered nationwide protests.

The victim’s father alleged that the cremation was carried out in haste and that certain individuals pressured the family into completing the process quickly.

West Bengal authorities ordered a separate probe into the cremation-related allegations. Officials said the role of multiple people involved in the process would be examined.

Allegations Over Documents and Signatures

The case has also raised questions over the documents used for granting consent for the cremation. Investigators are looking into allegations that signatures on the documents were not those of the victim’s immediate family members.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is separately investigating the main rape and murder case after the matter was transferred from Kolkata Police.

RG Kar Case Continues to Draw Political Attention

The RG Kar case remains one of the most closely watched criminal cases in West Bengal. The death of the young doctor sparked widespread protests by medical professionals and civil society groups demanding justice and accountability.

With the latest arrest, the focus has once again shifted to the events that followed the discovery of the victim’s body and the circumstances surrounding her cremation.
