Rahul’s father, Manoj Bharti, said the harassment began around two weeks ago after his son’s mobile phone was allegedly hacked. Rahul started receiving morphed nude images and videos of himself and his sisters via WhatsApp.
“The repeated threats left him distressed,” Manoj said. “He had stopped eating properly, rarely spoke to anyone, and spent most of his time alone in his room. Over the past 15 days, his behaviour changed completely.”
The family, originally from Bihar’s Siwan district, has been living in Faridabad’s Baselwa colony for nearly five decades. Manoj works as a driver. Rahul was the youngest of four children, with three daughters—two married and one unmarried.
On Saturday evening around 7 pm, Rahul reportedly consumed sulphas (pesticide tablets) in his room. His family rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he died during treatment. The incident has left the family and the community in shock, raising concern about the mental and emotional toll of cyber harassment.
Upon checking Rahul’s phone, his father discovered a series of WhatsApp conversations with a person named Sahil, who allegedly sent the AI-generated content and demanded money. In the last conversation, Sahil reportedly threatened to release the images and videos on social media and taunted Rahul to end his life, suggesting specific substances that could be lethal.
Manoj also alleged that a friend, Neeraj, might have been involved. Rahul’s last phone conversation before his death was reportedly with Neeraj. Both Sahil and Neeraj have been named in the police complaint.
Old Faridabad police station in-charge Vishnu Kumar said authorities are tracing both suspects. He noted that the case highlights a “disturbing trend of the misuse of AI technology for cyber extortion.” Police officials are examining all digital evidence and seeking to identify additional leads to prevent further misuse of AI-generated content for blackmail.
