Tripura medical student killed in Dehradun after confronting racial abuse

Dehradun: An Adivasi (tribal) student was brutally beaten to death in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, after speaking out against racial slurs. The student's death has caused widespread outrage in Tripura after his body arrived in the state.

The victim has been identified as Anjel Chakma, a resident of Tripura. Anjel was a final-year MBA student at Jigyasa University in Dehradun. He was critically injured in the attack and succumbed to his injuries after fighting for his life in the hospital for several days.

What happened?
On December 9, at around 6-7 PM, Anjel and his younger brother, Michael Chakma, went out to buy groceries in the Selaqui area of ​​Dehradun. There, they were subjected to racial slurs by some intoxicated individuals.

According to reports, the attackers used abusive language and made several derogatory remarks. When the two brothers protested, the attackers resorted to violence. Michael was struck on the head, while Anjel was stabbed in the neck and stomach. Anjel was admitted to a local hospital, where he died on Friday.

Large Crowd Gathers for Funeral
Anjel's body was flown to Agartala via Delhi. Several family members and political leaders were present at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport. From there, the body was taken to Anjel's ancestral village in Unakoti. A large crowd gathered outside his home before the funeral.

Demand for Central Government Intervention
Following Anjel's death, his family and several student organizations have demanded intervention from the central government. They are calling for strict punishment for the perpetrators and for concrete steps to be taken to address the problem of racial discrimination against youth from the Northeast region.
