Hyderabad: A shocking and tragic incident unfolded in the Vanasthalipuram area of Hyderabad on Wednesday. A 29-year-old software professional, Sunitha, was allegedly murdered by her ex-husband, Devarakonda Mahesh, in her fourth-floor flat in Green City Colony, where she was working from home.

According to police, the accused suddenly entered the flat around noon and went straight to the room where Sunitha was present. He abruptly locked the room from the inside and got into a heated argument with her. Within minutes, the situation escalated into violence, and Mahesh stabbed Sunitha multiple times.

Multiple Stabbings; Death on the Spot

According to investigating officials, the accused stabbed Sunitha multiple times on various parts of her body, including her head. The attack was so severe that Sunitha succumbed to her injuries on the spot. Meanwhile, her mother-in-law was drying clothes on the terrace, and her brother-in-law was in another room. Hearing Sunitha's screams, family members rushed to the room and found her covered in blood.

Threatening to Set Himself on Fire by Pouring Petrol

By the time police received information about the incident, the accused had already doused the room with petrol and locked himself in the bathroom. He also had a lighter and was threatening to set the room on fire. Police tried to persuade him for a long time to surrender. Finally, they broke down the door and arrested him.

Old Rivalry and Legal Dispute Led to the Murder

According to the police, Sunitha and Mahesh, both employed in the software sector, were married in 2022. After marriage, they lived together in Canada for some time, but differences soon arose between them. Sunitha returned to India and later filed for divorce. In 2024, they divorced by mutual consent.

After returning to India, Sunitha also filed a domestic violence case against Mahesh in Maharashtra, which led to a lookout circular being issued against him and the confiscation of his passport when he returned to India after his mother’s death. According to police, he was extremely angry and frustrated over his inability to return to Canada and Sunitha's remarriage. Sunitha was reportedly three months pregnant.

Planned Crime

Investigation revealed that the accused had been monitoring Sunitha's movements and addresses through social media for the past two months.

He had already planned the murder when he moved to Hyderabad and started staying in a hostel. On the day of the incident, he brought two knives, a drill machine, a chainsaw, and five liters of petrol. CCTV footage shows him walking with a bag in the apartment corridor.

Police have registered a murder case against the accused and begun further investigation.
