Murshidabad: West Bengal Police on Sunday arrested the main accused in the case of brutal murder of a father and son during a violent protest against the Waqf Act in Jaffrabad of Murshidabad district. With this, the total number of those arrested has gone up to four, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

The arrested person has been identified as Ziaul Sheikh, a resident of Sulitala Purbapara, a neighbouring village of Jaffrabad. He was absconding since the crime took place on April 12. Sheikh was arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) and Special Investigation Team (SIT) of West Bengal Police from his hideout in Chopra of North Dinajpur district on Saturday.

Protests against the Waqf Amendment Act took place in Murshidabad and Jangipur in West Bengal on April 11 and 12, which took the form of violence. At the same time, five companies of BSF were deployed on the instructions of the Calcutta High Court when the situation worsened. According to the police, three people died in the violence on Friday night, after which a tense atmosphere prevails in the area.

Hargobind Das (72) and his son Chandan (40) were killed by a mob in front of their house on Friday, while protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act in the state turned violent in Murshidabad, leading to widespread tension and communal riots in parts of the district.

The state police constituted an 11-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Murshidabad DIG Syed Waqar Raza to investigate this and other cases of violence in the district.

Earlier this week, the police had arrested two brothers Kalu Nawab and Dildar Nawab, residents of the same area, in connection with the crime.

Kalu was arrested from Suti village near the Indo-Bangladesh border, while Dildar was arrested from Murarai in Birbhum near the Jharkhand border.

Police said he is one of the main accused who instigated the mob to vandalise the house of the deceased and kill Hargobindo Das and his son Chandan Das on April 12.

According to the police, they have all the evidence, CCTV footage and his mobile phone tower location to prove his presence at the spot on April 12.
