New Delhi: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has approved a series of new regulations for the 99th Academy Awards, signalling a shift in how films and performances will be recognised. The updated framework reflects evolving industry practices while reinforcing the importance of human creativity.

Actors Can Now Earn Multiple Nominations

In a significant update, performers will now be eligible for multiple nominations within the same acting category. Previously, only one performance per actor could be considered, even if several ranked among the top five. Under the new system, stars like Leonardo DiCaprio could potentially secure more than one nomination in categories such as Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor in the same year.

The Academy has also clarified that only performances by human actors, credited officially and performed with consent, will qualify.

Clear Stand on AI and Screenwriting

The Academy has introduced stricter guidelines around artificial intelligence. While the use of AI tools is not entirely restricted, filmmakers may be required to disclose how such technology is used. Importantly, screenplays must be written by humans to remain eligible in writing categories, reaffirming the Academy’s emphasis on authorship.

Big Opportunity for Indian Cinema

A major change has been introduced in the Best International Feature Film category. Previously, each country could submit only one official entry. Now, films that win top honours at major festivals such as Cannes Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival and Venice Film Festival can independently qualify for Oscar consideration.

This opens the door for multiple entries from a single country, potentially boosting India’s presence in the category. Additionally, the award will now officially recognise the film’s director rather than the submitting country.

Other Category Updates

Changes have also been made across the technical categories. The casting award will now include up to three recipients. Cinematography will feature a fixed shortlist of 20 films during preliminary voting. Voting rules have been tightened in categories like makeup, hairstyling and visual effects to ensure informed decision-making.

Ceremony Dates Confirmed

The 99th Oscars ceremony is scheduled for March 14, 2027, while the milestone 100th edition will follow on March 5, 2028.
