New Delhi: The much-anticipated film Alpha, part of the YRF spy universe, introduces a female-led action narrative centered on a highly trained operative played by Alia Bhatt. The film attempts to expand the franchise with new characters and a fresh direction but ultimately falls short of expectations.
Alia Bhatt portrays the lead role of “Alpha,” a specially trained fighter under the mentorship of veteran soldier Fateh Singh, played by Bobby Deol. Sharvari appears as Alpha’s second-in-command, contributing to several action sequences that highlight the duo’s combat skills.
Despite committed performances from the cast, including Anil Kapoor as the RAW chief overseeing operations, the film struggles with its writing. The storyline relies heavily on familiar spy-thriller tropes, including cross-border espionage, undercover threats, and standard patriotic themes.
Critics point out that while the actors bring energy to their roles, the narrative does not offer new or engaging developments, making the plot feel predictable.
The film features multiple action set-pieces, including sequences shot across Cherrapunji, Rajasthan, Ladakh, and Kashmir. Alia Bhatt and Sharvari are seen performing high-intensity combat scenes, which stand out as some of the film’s better moments.
A brief appearance by Dia Mirza also leaves an impression, adding emotional depth as Alpha’s mother.
However, a stylised musical sequence set in a European location feels disconnected from the main storyline and adds little value to the narrative.
Like earlier entries in the YRF spy universe, Alpha includes elements such as RAW operations, international threats, and internal betrayal plots. A storyline involving a mole and cross-border espionage forms the central conflict, but it remains predictable.
The film also briefly features Hrithik Roshan’s character Kabir from the franchise, who assists the protagonists in an action sequence set in a monastery.
While Alpha aims to establish a strong female-led chapter in the spy universe, it is held back by weak storytelling and overused clichés. Despite strong performances and high production value, the film struggles to deliver a fresh or impactful spy thriller experience.
