New Delhi: After witnessing a relatively quiet spell over the past two months, the Indian box office is preparing for a packed August with several high-profile releases lined up across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Hollywood cinema.
The month features sequels, period dramas, action entertainers, horror films and biographical stories, with major stars including Emraan Hashmi, Sunny Deol, Yash, Nani, Dulquer Salmaan, R. Madhavan and Pankaj Tripathi returning to the big screen.
The release calendar opens on August 7 with three films targeting different audiences. Director Lokesh Kanagaraj steps in front of the camera for the first time in DC, a romantic action drama inspired by Devdas.
R. Madhavan headlines G.D.N., a biographical film based on celebrated inventor Gopalaswamy Doraiswamy Naidu, while Pankaj Tripathi's Ohh My Dog brings an emotional adventure centred on the relationship between humans and their canine companions.
The biggest battle at the ticket window is expected on August 14 as multiple big-budget films release simultaneously.
Emraan Hashmi reprises his role as Shivam in Awarapan 2, marking the return of one of his most popular characters after 19 years. The action-romantic drama continues the story of redemption set against the backdrop of the criminal underworld.
Sharing the release date is Sunny Deol's Batwara 1947, a period action drama that explores the human tragedy of India's Partition through the journey of a family torn apart by history.
Hollywood joins the Independence Day weekend with The End of Oak Street, a mystery thriller scheduled for an IMAX release in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Horror lovers will also have Agadha, a supernatural mystery thriller, while family audiences can watch Vishwanath And Sons, starring Suriya.
