‘Dhurandhar 2’ Storms the Box Office but Fails to Break ‘Dangal’ and ‘Baahubali 2’ Records — Here’s Why

Dhurandhar 2 earned ₹1764.15 crore worldwide but failed to surpass Dangal and Baahubali 2. Factors like limited China release, Gulf ban, weak regional performance, A certification, and long runtime impacted its box office potential despite massive success.

New Delhi: Dhurandhar 2 has made huge money at the box office and has collected a worldwide collection of Rs 1764.15 crore. The film broke many records, but still could not leave behind Baahubali 2: The Conclusion and Dangal.

How far behind is the film?

  • ‘Dhurandhar 2’: Rs 1764.15 crore
  • 'Baahubali 2': Rs 1788.06 crore (about Rs 28 crore ahead)
  • ‘Dangal’: Rs 2070.3 crore (far ahead)

That means 'Dhurandhar 2' lagged behind 'Baahubali 2' by just a small margin but was at a considerable distance from 'Dangal.'

Impact of China and the Gulf market

The biggest reason for the success of 'Dangal' was the Chinese box office, where the film alone earned more than Rs 1300 crore. Whereas ‘Dhurandhar 2’ did not get the same opportunity in China.

Apart from this, the film also suffered losses due to the ban in Gulf countries, from where it could have earned around Rs 100 crore.

Weak performance in regional languages. The film did not get much response in South Indian languages:

Hindi: 1053.71 crores

  • Tamil: 19.39 crores
  • Telugu: 42.56 crores
  • Kannada: 3.66 crores
  • Malayalam: 1.77 crore

While films like 'Baahubali 2' and 'RRR' earned equally across the country, the South market of 'Dhurandhar 2' remained weak. The 'A' certificate became a big hurdle. Since the film received an 'A' certificate, only 18+ audiences could watch it. This kept the family audience away and affected ticket sales.

Long runtime also became the reason. The length of about 3 hours and 49 minutes and excessive violence also kept many viewers away from theaters. Not everyone is ready to watch such a long and intense film.

Still a big success

Although 'Dhurandhar 2' could not break the record, it has proved to be a big hit. Both the parts of the 'Dhurandhar' franchise together have done a business of more than Rs 3000 crore, which makes it a successful franchise of Indian cinema.
