Mumbai: Producer Ektaa Kapoor has confirmed that The Dirty Picture 2 is in development, nearly 15 years after the original film became a major talking point in Hindi cinema. The filmmaker says she has finally found a story that she wants to bring to the screen, although details about the sequel remain under wraps.
Speaking on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, Ektaa discussed some of the major projects she is currently working on and named The Dirty Picture 2 among them. She indicated that the long awaited follow up is moving forward because she now has a narrative she feels is worth telling.
While the announcement has generated interest among Bollywood audiences, the producer has not revealed the film’s storyline, cast or expected release date. It is also unclear who will headline the upcoming project.
Released in 2011, The Dirty Picture starred Vidya Balan alongside Naseeruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi and Tusshar Kapoor. Inspired by the life of South Indian actress Silk Smitha, the film explored the entertainment industry’s treatment of women, public judgement and the complexities surrounding female sexuality.
Vidya Balan’s performance received widespread recognition and earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress.
Reflecting on the original film, Ektaa explained that she never viewed Silk Smitha merely as a victim. Instead, she saw her as a woman who embraced her sexuality and made choices on her own terms. This perspective formed an important part of the film’s narrative.
Ektaa has suggested that the sequel will once again revolve around a woman whose story has something meaningful to communicate. However, she has not disclosed whether the film will draw inspiration from another real-life personality or introduce a fictional character.
With the central character, cast and release timeline still unannounced, questions surrounding the sequel remain unanswered. For now, Ektaa’s confirmation marks the first major step towards bringing the franchise back to the big screen.
