New Delhi: The recent order of the Supreme Court to remove stray dogs from the streets of Delhi-NCR and send them to shelter homes has sparked a new debate everywhere. This decision of the court has now become a cause of debate across the country. Especially Bollywood celebrities are openly coming out in protest against this decision. Now actor John Abraham on Tuesday wrote a letter to Chief Justice BR Gavai urging him to review and amend the Supreme Court's recent directive to remove stray dogs from the Delhi-NCR region.

This letter comes a day after the court directed the authorities to permanently put all stray dogs from the streets to shelters as soon as possible. Apart from this, actor Varun Dhawan and actress Janhvi Kapoor have also expressed displeasure over this decision of the court.

John said- 'These are not stray dogs…'

John, who was the first director of PETA India, said that the dogs are not strays, but are part of the community and many people love them. I hope you will agree that these are not strays, but community dogs, which are loved by many people, and especially Delhiites. This directive is contrary to the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023 and previous decisions of the Supreme Court on this issue, which have consistently upheld a systematic sterilization program. Removing stray dogs from public places does not solve the problem. I respectfully request a review and amendment of this decision.

Bollywood raised voice for animals

Bollywood actress Janhvi Kapoor and actor Varun Dhawan have expressed their displeasure on social media, calling this order ruthless and unfair. Sharing a petition in her Instagram story, Janhvi wrote that these animals living on the streets are not just stray dogs, but they are part of our society.

Janhvi Kapoor shared the post

Janhvi's appeal said, 'These are the same dogs who wait for biscuits outside the tea shop every morning, who guard the shops all night, who welcome children by wagging their tails when they return from school. These are the creatures who give a sense of belonging even in this ruthless city.'

Shirking eyes from the problem is not the solution

Janhvi's appeal also mentioned that the solution to every problem is not incarceration. Removing animals from the streets and putting them in shelter homes is neither a practical solution nor an ethical one. Instead, measures like large-scale sterilization, vaccination, community feeding zones and adoption campaigns should be taken.

Varun Dhawan also expressed displeasure

At the same time, actor Varun Dhawan also shared this petition on his Instagram story and opposed the decision. Varun has lived with pets for many years and he has raised his voice for animal rights earlier as well.

Raveena Tandon has also expressed her opposition

Earlier, Raveena Tandon has also given her opinion on this matter. Talking to HT City, she said, 'It is wrong to blame these poor dogs for the increasing number of stray dogs. If the local bodies had carried out the vaccination and sterilization campaign properly, this situation would not have arisen. The local bodies will have to take responsibility of the stray dogs in their area. Sterilization is the biggest need today.'

Supreme Court's stand and controversy

During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had said that the safety of children and infants is paramount and they cannot be put in danger just because some people call themselves 'animal lovers'. This comment has angered the organizations working for the welfare of animals and pet lovers.
