Mumbai: Following its theatrical release, 'Ramayana: Part 1' is facing the challenge of piracy. After some unauthorized clips surfaced online, the film's producers issued a legal warning. They have urged the audience not to record any scenes while watching the film, nor to share them elsewhere.

Producers' warning against piracy

In a notice issued on the film's official Instagram account on Saturday, the team stated that they have become aware of footage being recorded inside cinema halls and subsequently circulated on social media and messaging platforms.

They have requested people to stop sharing these clips and have urged those who have already uploaded them to remove them immediately.

The notice states, "Doing so constitutes a copyright infringement. It is a criminal offense that could lead to imprisonment and fines under the Copyright Act 1957, the Cinematograph Act 1952, the BNS 2023, and the IT Act 2000. Furthermore, it will also be considered contempt of court."

The producers have stated that if anyone is caught recording or sharing such footage, the matter will be reported to the relevant authorities and the platforms where the content appears. They have warned that legal proceedings encompassing criminal, civil, and contempt of court charges may be initiated against such individuals without any prior notice. Intervention by the Bombay High Court.

This warning follows an interim order from the Bombay High Court, which provides protection against piracy for the film even before its release. According to 'Bar and Bench', the court has restrained unknown individuals and digital platforms from recording, uploading, streaming, or sharing the film without authorization.

This order was issued by Justice Madhav Jamdar in a copyright case filed by 'Godpower Media Private Limited', the company that holds the copyright and distribution rights for the film in India and abroad.

The production company had sought protection for the film’s script, characters, footage, song lyrics, and recordings. They informed the court that, despite the signing of confidentiality agreements for private preview screenings, portions of the trailer were surreptitiously recorded and shared online.

The court has directed internet service providers and social media platforms to remove or block pirated content upon receiving a complaint. According to reports, counsel for Google and other platforms have agreed to take action in response to such complaints.
