Mumbai: Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has addressed the controversy surrounding his recent remarks about the lack of peace in India, saying that the comments were made as part of a scripted and humorous exchange rather than as a statement intended to offend anyone.

The controversy erupted after Dutt appeared on Shekhar Suman’s YouTube talk show Shekhar Tonite during a special episode released around Gandhi Jayanti. While discussing the country, the actor said that although Indians were warm and generous, he no longer experienced the same sense of peace in the country.

The remarks quickly drew criticism on social media, with portions of the conversation being circulated without the broader context of the segment. Dutt subsequently issued a clarification on social media, stressing that he had no intention of hurting or disrespecting any individual, community or institution. He said the conversation had been scripted and was designed to be light-hearted and satirical.

According to the actor, the tone of the exchange was influenced by the humour associated with his popular Munna Bhai films, particularly the idea of “Gandhigiri” explored in Lage Raho Munna Bhai.

He said the underlying message was intended to promote affection, unity, harmony and goodwill. The actor maintained that his remarks were understood differently after being separated from the context in which they were delivered.

What Sanjay Dutt said on Shekhar Suman’s show

During the Gandhi Jayanti episode, Dutt spoke about the character of Indian society and expressed his desire for greater peace. His remarks came before he was invited to imagine himself as the Prime Minister for five minutes.

Dutt then adopted the mannerisms and language of his iconic Munna Bhai character for the satirical segment. The fictional political address touched on issues including political imagery in public spaces, leaders' foreign visits and the need for greater engagement between political leadership and ordinary citizens.

He also invoked Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence and used humour to make a broader appeal for dialogue instead of confrontation.

The actor's performance also included a tongue-in-cheek reference to US President Donald Trump, with Dutt suggesting that disagreements should be settled through conversation and goodwill rather than threats or conflict.

The episode's references to Gandhi and “Gandhigiri” were particularly significant given the occasion. Lage Raho Munna Bhai, in which Dutt's character embraces Gandhian principles, had popularised the term as a contemporary interpretation of Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence and peaceful resistance.

Dutt's clarification came after the comments triggered an online debate, with critics questioning his remarks about the country. By explaining that the exchange was scripted and intended as satire, the actor sought to distinguish the performance from his personal views.

The controversy has since shifted attention from the original comments to the larger question of context in televised and online entertainment, particularly when political satire and fictional performances are presented alongside personal conversations.
