New Delhi: The film launched on 7 November with a modest first-day haul of around Rs 1.30 crore, which for a star-led Telugu release with an actor of Rashmika Mandanna’s stature is underwhelming. However, thanks to growing audience interest the second-day collection climbed to about Rs 2.55 crore, indicating that word-of-mouth was beginning to push footfall. By Sunday the film collected approximately Rs 2.18 crore, bringing the three-day domestic net to over Rs 6 crore.

What’s Fueling the Growth?

Several factors appear to be contributing:

  • The film’s core theme, tracking a young woman’s journey from romance into self-assertion, has resonated with viewers seeking more than just light entertainment.
  • Rashmika Mandanna’s portrayal of ‘Bhooma’ has drawn praise, helping elevate the film’s appeal beyond its opening.
  • The Telugu market in particular delivered stronger numbers in afternoon and evening slots, suggesting that word-of-mouth kicked in with some delay.
  • Because the opening was modest, the growth dynamic looks more sustainable as audiences reportedly recommended the film to others.

Challenges Ahead

Despite crossing the Rs 5 crore threshold, the film still faces a number of hurdles:

  • The numbers, while respectable for a mid-tier release, are far from blockbuster scale given today’s South Indian market standards.
  • Expansion into non-Telugu territories remains uncertain; if the Hindi, Tamil or dubbed versions don’t pick up, growth may plateau.
  • It will be critical for weekday occupancies to hold up; a sharp drop would dampen the momentum built over the weekend.
  • With trade estimates indicating the break-even/share threshold may lie around Rs 12-15 crore share for the distributors, there’s still a long way to go.

Final Word

Hitting the Rs 5 crore mark in three days places The Girlfriend in a moderate success zone, not an explosive opening but a meaningful movement upward. The film’s ability to leverage word-of-mouth and maintain growth, especially in Telugu strongholds, will determine whether it becomes a sleeper hit or settles into the average zone. For Rashmika Mandanna, the film underscores her versatility in content-driven cinema, and for the makers the focus now shifts to sustaining visibility and reach beyond the weekend surge.
