Mumbai: Bollywood has featured several fictional spy heroes over the years, but an upcoming film is set to bring the story of a real Indian intelligence legend to the big screen. Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions is developing a film based on Rameshwar Nath Kao, the man who founded India’s external intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW).
The project is inspired by the book “R.N. Kao: Gentleman Spymaster” and will focus on the life, career and contributions of one of India’s most influential intelligence officers.
Rameshwar Nath Kao, popularly known as RN Kao, was born in 1918 and joined government service before moving into intelligence work. During his career, he handled several important assignments and earned recognition for his strategic approach and deep understanding of security matters.
After the need for a separate external intelligence organisation grew, Kao played a key role in establishing R&AW in 1968. He became the agency’s first chief and worked towards creating a strong intelligence structure for India.
RN Kao’s career is closely linked with some of the most important events in India’s security history. During the 1971 India-Pakistan war, intelligence operations became a significant part of India’s strategic planning.
R&AW’s activities during that period were considered important in gathering information and supporting India’s efforts during the events that eventually led to the creation of Bangladesh.
Unlike fictional characters who operate in the spotlight, RN Kao worked largely away from public attention. His quiet approach and contribution to India’s intelligence framework earned him the reputation of a “Gentleman Spymaster”.
Over the years, his name has become associated with the evolution of India’s intelligence capabilities and the country’s national security strategy.
Dharma Productions’ upcoming project aims to introduce a wider audience to RN Kao’s journey, from his early intelligence assignments to building one of India’s most important security institutions.
The film is expected to explore the lesser-known aspects of Kao’s professional life and the challenges involved in shaping India’s intelligence network.
