Kathmandu: A remarkable rescue operation in Nepal has brought a ray of hope after two workers were found alive inside a flood-hit hydropower tunnel, nine days after devastating floods trapped them underground.

The two workers, identified as Kabir Maharjan and Sanjay Shah, were rescued from the Trishuli 3A Hydropower Project tunnel in Nepal’s Trishuli region. Rescue teams pulled them out after days of intense efforts following the deadly flash floods that struck several parts of the country on August 26.

Visuals from the rescue operation showed mud-covered workers being carried out by rescuers as teams celebrated the rare survival. One of the rescued workers was seen conscious but weak, while another was taken for medical treatment.

Hundreds Feared Trapped in Nepal Tunnels

The rescue comes amid a massive search operation across Nepal’s hydropower projects. According to local authorities, around 900 workers are missing from 12 hydropower projects, with nearly 500 believed to be trapped inside tunnels.

Rescue teams are using heavy equipment and pumping air into blocked tunnels to increase the chances of finding more survivors.

Floods Cause Massive Destruction

The flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains have caused widespread destruction across Nepal. The disaster has claimed hundreds of lives, while thousands remain missing, according to officials.

Despite the scale of devastation, the survival of the two workers after nine days has renewed hopes among families waiting for news of their loved ones.
