Tehran: A senior Iranian official has said a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei is highly unlikely at present, accusing Trump of pushing ongoing negotiations into a “standstill.”
In an interview with an American media outlet, Iranian military adviser Mohsen Rezaei said the current diplomatic freeze was caused by Washington’s approach.

Responding to Trump’s recent remarks expressing interest in meeting Khamenei, Rezaei said, “This will not happen,” adding that negotiations are stuck in their initial phase.
He maintained that the “ball is in Trump’s court” and called on the US administration to take steps to break the deadlock.
The dispute over Iran’s nuclear programme continues to be the central issue in US-Iran relations. Trump recently claimed that Tehran had agreed to pause parts of its nuclear activities, though Iranian officials swiftly rejected those assertions.
The conflicting statements have further highlighted the fragile state of diplomacy between the two countries.
Rezaei also demanded the release of frozen Iranian assets, arguing that the funds belong to the Iranian people and should not be withheld by the United States.

He additionally reiterated Tehran’s stance on the Strait of Hormuz, suggesting Iran could seek maintenance-related charges from vessels passing through the strategic waterway. Washington, however, has repeatedly insisted that the passage must remain open to international shipping without restrictions.
The remarks come amid continuing tensions in the region, with both sides holding firm to their demands. While Trump has publicly expressed optimism about resolving the conflict, Iranian officials continue to signal distrust toward Washington’s intentions.
Observers say the prospects for direct high-level engagement remain uncertain unless diplomatic momentum is restored.
