Boat capsized near Lampedusa coast of Italy; 27 migrants killed; 35 people still missing

Rome: At least 27 migrants and refugees died in a boat accident near Lampedusa island of Italy on Thursday. The accident took place on the Mediterranean Sea route. The United Nations Refugee (UNHCR) agency gave this information.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said on the social media platform X that more than 700 migrants and refugees have lost their lives in the Mediterranean route so far in the year 2025. He said that to deal with such incidents, all efforts like rescue operations at sea, arrangement of safety routes, help to the destination countries and removing the root causes need to be strengthened further.

Grandi further wrote in his post, 27 people have died in a tragic boat accident near Lampedusa. More than 700 migrants have died so far in the year 2025. Now it is necessary to strengthen the response at every level, whether it is rescue at sea, legal ways or solving the root causes.

675 deaths on the Mediterranean route this year

People had boarded two boats from Libya

International Migration Office (IMO) spokesperson Flavido De Giacomo shared information about this accident. He said that about 95 people had left from Libya in two boats. One of these boats started filling with water, after which everyone boarded the other boat. But due to more people, that boat also capsized.

60 people rescued, 35 still missing
